Land & Sea: the story of a life project 🌿
Some places have a history before they have a name. Glamping Terre & Mer is first and foremost an old campsite in its original state, to be completely reinvented – a somewhat crazy gamble – and a local couple who never considered building their project anywhere other than on the land of their roots, in Côtes d'Armor!
Alexandre was born in Saint-Brieuc and grew up between the woods of Tréguidel and the beach at Étables-sur-Mer, where he learned to swim. Gwenaëlle has her roots in Plourhan and Étables-sur-Mer. When you're looking for a place to put something permanent, you always come back to where you grew up.
Village Nature ****: What these words mean 🏕️
Village, because that's exactly what we wanted to create: a space where you feel like you belong, not just in a row of numbered boxes. Nature, because it's the raw material of everything here. And four stars, because nature justifies no compromise on comfort.
Glamping is precisely that: the best of both worlds. The peace and space of the outdoors, with the comfort of quality accommodation. Neither the spartan camping experience where you just endure it, nor the sterile hotel where you get bored, but something in between, only better!
Six years of searching, a few months to change everything 🔨
For six years, we sought to create a nature-based accommodation complex on the Côtes d'Armor coastline. Several projects, several obstacles, but we're not the type to give up: on the coast, creating accommodation from scratch is virtually impossible. The solution? Find a campsite with strong potential and transform it.
In 2017, we bought the former L'Abri Côtier campsite, which had been established in the 1970s and merged with Les Blés d'Or in 2010. We had just a few weeks to open before the summer. The location was perfect: close to the sea, well integrated into the urban area, with 47,000 m² to reinvent. But the condition of the site was another matter entirely.
Everything needed to be completely redone. Every corner of the property was piled high with objects accumulated over a very long time; it was like opening a giant flea market! We started the renovations even before finalizing the sale, because there was no other choice. Three out of four banks had rejected our application, deeming our timeline untenable. They weren't entirely wrong.
We opened anyway. Since then, every penny has been reinvested in the property. Today, almost nothing remains of the old campsite, and it finally looks like what we had envisioned even before we bought it. In that first year, the property earned its 4-star rating.
Why "Glamping Land & Sea"? 🌊
First, the word "glamping": in 2017, it was still rare in France, and that's precisely why we included it in our name. A clear, immediately differentiating positioning.
Land & Sea then, and not "between Land & Sea". Because we are not halfway between anything. The sea is 500 meters away. The woods, fields, and Breton countryside begin on the other side. Here, you experience both fully. Calm, space, freedom: three words that sum up quite well what you feel when you arrive here for the first time.
Our vision of glamping 🌱
We wanted an open-air hotel where words truly have meaning: permanent, wooden accommodations, all secluded, each with its own private garden. No shared bathrooms, no cars on the property, no neighbors within two meters.
In Brittany, the weather is part of the charm, and we fully embrace it. All our accommodations are designed to be just as pleasant in 30°C heat as under more unpredictable skies, because a true getaway shouldn't depend on the weather forecast.
Increasingly exotic vegetation, adapted to the climate of the future, creates an atmosphere of "being somewhere else, yet here." Originality, comfort, tranquility. And ecology too, but never punitive. concrete, discreet, aligned with common sense.
We deliberately limited the domain to 31 accommodations. Not to do less, but to do better!
Tranquility as a deliberate choice 🤫
We do not offer any activities on the property, and this is a deliberate choice. The region is rich enough in discoveries, walks, markets, and quality restaurants to fill an entire stay.
Here, the common areas are designed for socializing if desired, and for privacy if preferred. The tranquility of the place is not a happy accident, it is a deliberate requirement.
A way of life, not just a job 🏡
We live on the property with our two children, Eden and Elia. The estate is their playground, and each season they meet up with returning guests' children. Working seven days a week during the season has its constraints—no summer holidays for the family—but above all, it has its joys: welcoming customers who are looking for exactly what we have built, and seeing them leave having truly disconnected.
Gwenaëlle and Alexandre are there, on the estate, available and happy to be so.
In October 2021, Glamping Terre & Mer received the Côtes d'Armor Tourism Innovation Trophy. A great recognition, but above all a confirmation: the project we had in mind for so long had found its place.
